Sex work can be dangerous both physically and psychologically. Based on a global consultation with sex workers, the World Health Organization (WHO, 2012) outlined three common types of violence that sex workers face: physical, sexual, and psychological.
The greatest risk seems to be with independent work. Many workers gravitate towards Brothel work verses Independent work because of lower risk factors. Of course this doesn’t mean that working at a brothel guarantees safety, but it certainly lowers risk significantly.
This is not about trying to convince you to go from independent work to brothel work, in fact we carry no judgement on these choices. All we desire is, for you, to be as safe as possible, and maybe put into practice some safety measures to help.
These safe practices are, if you choose, there to help minimise your risks.
Brothel Work
So, some would say, that choosing a brothel to work is all lovely, and thats that. Well we encourage everyone to manage your own personal safety and well being, even if you are working in a brothel, as many of you know, and for those who are new, being at a brothel does not guarantee your safety.
So here are some suggestions in checking out your environment, if you are considering brothel work.
What to look for when visiting potential brothels
Owner/Managers - Is the interaction comfortable, when you first meet with them?
Ask Questions - What are there expectations of hours to be worked? What is the split or payment for services provided? If I don’t feel comfortable during a introduction, do you allow workers the right to say “no thankyou”, I don’t want to see that person?
Is it clean - Clean environment should be a basic expectation. Its important.
